Companions recognise the need to make positive arrangements to help young people observe and preserve their religious, racial, cultural and linguistic identity and heritage.
The staff will ensure these arrangements are practised and should as far as practicable ensure young people are able to attend services of, to receive instruction in, and to observe any requirements, whether it be dress, diet or otherwise of their religious persuasion.
As a regular part of the programme of work Companions will promote and participate in various festivals
traditions & celebrations of different cultures, faith and religions from around the world.
This is facilitated by music, art and craft, food, education, posters etc.. This must be done with sensitivity to ensure no person gets offended or embarrassed.
Young people will be encouraged to explore an on-going project 'Around the World'. The project requires young people to look at populations, climates & climate change, currency, faiths, Religions, traditions, food, employment, education etc.
Companions is registered with the Red Cross and Oxfam which inform us of current topics and links to schools around the world.
Companions staff team is sensitive to the religious persuasion, racial origin, and linguistic background of each young person. Information will be documented in the young persons care plan and should underpin all practices of work, which is at all times anti-oppressive and anti-discriminatory.
Companions promote diverse expressions of religion, race, ethnicity, culture and language in ways, which are understood by the young person and other young people living at Companions.
Young people's individual identity may be reflected in dress, music, customs, celebrations and festivals. These will be facilitated in ways, which do not cause embarrassment or undue difficulty.
Staff will investigate suitable facilities available within the area of places of worship, prayer, instruction in order to meet the needs of each individual young person.
Companions is sensitive to special requirements in respect of hair and skin care e.g young people of African or Caribbean backgrounds.
